INDEX[1]Premium Textile Japan 2012 Spring/Summer After-show report

The textile business salon, <Premium Textile Japan 2012 Spring/Summer> (PTJ), organised by the Japan Fashion Week Organisation (JFW) was held at 2 proximate venues, <Stadium Place Aoyama> and <Tepia>, Minato Ward, Aoyama, Tokyo on May 11 and 12. We are pleased to announce that the show, which featured 61 entries/72 standard booths and which was limited to buyers and invited visitors only, attracted many more visitors than expected, despite the unfavourable rainy weather

<Exhibitors'feedback>...'Impressed by visitor numbers'

It is precisely 2 months since the Great East Japan Earthquake. We had two participants from the affected region; Nihon Homespun Co., Ltd. (Hanamaki City, Iwate Pref.) and Saiei Orimono Co., Ltd. (Date County, Fukushima Pref.) 'Part of the premises were badly damaged and the distribution system had to be shut down, but we have now recovered and decided to participate this time; mainly to convey our greetings to customers and also aiming to cultivate new clients.' (Nihon Homespun Co, Ltd.). 'Although the walls collapsed, fortunately the machines only trembled slightly, and despite it causing a momentary blockage in the distribution system, everything recovered within two weeks. Since we cannot organise an individual fair, we definitely wanted to participate in this show, and it certainly gave sales a positive boost in terms of cultivating new clients.' (Seiei Orimono Co., Ltd.), who actively engaged in negotiation throughout the entire show.

Matsui Knitting Crafts Mfg., Ltd. (Kiryu City, Gunma Pref.) was also affected in the disaster. 'Our factory was safe although some roof tiles of the main building fell off. During this fair, we presented golf wear and ponchos, wearable in town, as our aim was to release our newly developed products.' What we saw in common in these three companies from the affected region was a determined awareness that business itself is the best way to boost the regional recovery, and such positivity from the participants was the key to the success of the show.

Conversely, Piacere Co., Ltd., showcasing tweeds using fancy yarns, attracted many visitors to their booth, despite it being their first joint participation in the show, aiming to expand domestic sales beside their strong exports, which made up 80% of the whole business. Hataoka Co. decided to participate in targeting increased visitor numbers, shifting from the previous individual fair style and commenting, 'visitor numbers far exceeded our expectations'. Mondo Co., Ltd. also praised the show, commenting, 'we had many visitors thanks to the venue location, Aoyama', and showcasing a wide variety of originally designed yarns.

Overseas participants included four companies from Thailand. PN Textile Co., Ltd. exhibited products focusing on oriental-look prints. Thailand retained positivism in its participation, although many other anticipated overseas exhibitors announced last minute cancellations due to the disaster and ongoing nuclear power problems.

Business matching programme
     >>> offering sufficient opportunity for negotiations.

Business-matching was one of the business support programmes offered by our show. Among the participants were the 4 leading apparel companies: Onward Kashiyama Co., Ltd. / Sanei-International Co., Ltd. / Sanyo Shokai Ltd. and World Co., Ltd. alongside 4 maisons as VIP buyers; Flavor Co., Ltd. / Lewsten Co., Ltd. / Expert Works Tokyo Co., Ltd. and Theatre Products. There were also 26 companies among the PTJ exhibitors participating in this programme, making a total of 54 matching pairs. Below are some comments by the maisons having participated in this programme:

FLAVOR CO., LTD. <fur fur>
Aya Furuhashi / Designer of the 'fur fur' brand / Head of Planning Division
I have visited the JFW-JC show several times before, although I never found it so efficient in terms of genuine business opportunity. However, on this occasion, we had the chance to engage in in-depth negotiations with 6 companies from some selected 20 fabric makers that caught our interest, which certainly provided us with a helping hand towards the next business chance.
Location-wise, since Tokyo Big Sight is out of the way, a whole day is required to visit the show, making it

difficult, whereas Aoyama is perfect and easily accessible during my free time, which will be welcome for many designers, I suppose.
50% of the fabrics used in our collection were originally created through dialogue with Japanese fabric makers. The appeal of the Japanese textile is its sensitive texture and premium quality, providing ultimate reliance as well as guaranteed safety in usage.

Lewsten Co., Ltd. <matohu>
Hiroyuki Horihata / Makiko Sekiguchi - Designers
Although subject to relatively limited time for negotiation, we were both able to discuss our respective thoughts in-depth. We had selected 4 fabric makers in advance, and having a strong and clear concept of 'what we should sell' in mind helped facilitate the visualization of the final products/clothes. We would like to include fabrics from these 4 companies in our next collection.
After the devastating disaster, it is a little difficult to consider

fashion with a positive mindset, however it also gives us the opportunity to reconsider excessive consumption of fashion, I believe functional demands will intensify, for example, fabric-wise, a demand for cooler features in summer, and warmer functions in winter will surface. It can also be confirmed that everything is now functioning normally and smoothly in terms of production/distribution, despite the temporary breakdown in factory operations and supply flows immediately after the disaster.

Theatre Products Ltd. <THEATRE PRODUCTS>
Akira Takeuchi / Tayuka Nakanishi - Designers
I was happy to have enough time to source fabrics from fabric makers of considerable interest this time and was grateful to be given such opportunity, as it is never easy to source the specific fabrics I want most unaided or even through converters.

What came to mind after the disaster is our effort to create products that respect 'the feeling of happiness', and our policy to continue this creative attitude will be consolidated for as long as like-minded people exist. If we ever stop creating our products, those who have been supporting us will be in trouble, so I learned the importance of keeping the creative part going.

<Visitors'feedback>... 'The show concept was clearly focused'

Mr. Akikazu Shimomura, Chairman of the Japan Textile Federation, who visited the show on the first day, commented 'the key is that many exhibitors contributed to our show by participating; even under such severe conditions right after the disaster.'
'It was the first show under the newly launched salon style as PTJ, however the business-oriented concept was clearly visible and easy to understand' Designer at <The River> brand, Jun Hagan, also described it as follows: 'The show allowed me to encounter various brilliant fabrics as well as fabric makers, and it was also convenient to visit the show quite easily and freely as the venue was closer, which was very helpful.'
Designer of <A PUPIL>, Daisuke Nagata, evaluated the show thus, 'I have never seen such a great number of visitors at any fabric show in Japan, which could have been taken as the Premiere Vision. I visited the show just because some existing clients were exhibiting, but acquired unexpected gains to my delight.'
