Approximately 160 years ago, the idea of sKASURI technology originated with Kyuzaburo Tomita from the Bingo region (eastem Hiroshima). At the time weaving KASURI fabric was a family side business however, from the mid 1950's to 1960's the operation evolved as a result of meohanization and division of labor, and Bingogasuri became the main local industry.
At the peak of its business the Bingo are was responsible for 70% of kasuri production in Japan. Along with Kurumegasuri and Iyogasuri, Bingogasuri was known throughout Japan as one of the "Three Great Kasuri in Japan".
Kasuri is a fabric woven with pre-dyed thread. The warp and weft threads are bundied together for dyeing an indigo color with sections tied that become patterns when woven into fabric. Weaving the warp and weft threads creates diverse patterns.
There are over 20 detailed steps before KASURI becomes a finished product Skilled craftsmen take each step with both patience and passlon, and their skills have been handed down from generation to generation to this day. |
