INDEX[2] Promoting Sustainable Textiles

Since last year, JFW has been promoting the ‘JFW SUSTAINABLITY PROJECT’ and striving to educate the public on and promote sustainable textiles. We are delighted to introduce a selection of exhibitors dealing with sustainable textiles.

KANEMASA KNITTING CO., LTD. <D-34>

Uncompromising approaches even to yarn and finishing

KANEMASA KNITTING deals with the planning/production/sales of knitted fabrics and apparel products, fully leveraging their in-house circular knitting factories in Wakayama Prefecture. They handle fabrics across the board, from casual to dress items and recently even succeeded in producing and branding woven-like knitted fabrics named ‘marudeorie’, which are made with their original super fine gauge jacquard machines (36G-46G). Their uncompromising approaches for fabric manufacturing are justified; not only for knitting, but also yarn/finishing, with 60% of all production devoted to specially customized items.

On this occasion, they will focus on fabrics using originally developed sustainable yarn. < SUVIN RECYCLE ORGANIC > is an original and 100% sustainable yarn; blending cotton waste collected during the production process instead of being disposed of as normal, with high-quality extra-long staple cotton. < ORGANIC SUVIN > is made by blending extremely rare organic SUVIN cotton and premium-quality extra-long staple cotton.

Most of the polyester they handle is made with recycled raw materials. Typical items include: < COOLMAX ECOMADE > and < ECO CALCULO >. One of their unique finishing techniques, meanwhile, is < MA processing >, which is bespoke resin-processing to obtain both freshness and a tensive/stiff-feel with a woven-like touch. They are aiming to leverage such stand-out features and acquire new customers by joining the fair.

SANYO SENKO CO., LTD. <A-3>

Proposing finishing techniques including Biggie

SANYO SENKO, a regular PTJ exhibitor, has been constantly evolving and seeking to innovate production techniques and systems for higher and better-quality products, with a long-established tradition since the Taisho Era (1912-1926). With diversification of the fashion industry in mind, the company not only provides its acclaimed indigo-dyeing on one of the largest scales of its kind in terms of production capacity in Japan but is also constantly engaged in sustainability activities in the context of quality control and environmental protection, including Biggie processing.

Pre-processing usually requires desizing, refining and bleaching whereas washer finishing, applied for Biggie processing, can help reduce the amount of water and chemical agents used as well as providing a unique texture.

On this occasion, they will focus on fabrics using organic cotton, including an edgy material made of organic cotton and linen and with a dry-feel thanks to the application of washer processing.

Fabrics with botanical dye application retain a soft and natural surface feel and a unique and pure texture. They are also friendlier to the environment than equivalents , unlike those dyed with an artificial synthetic dye.

Apart from the abovementioned products, specifically processed denim fabrics; with gradational discharge alongside coloured discharge will also be showcased on this occasion.

PANOCO TRADING CO., LTD. <A-44>

Globally certified organic cotton

PANOCO TRADING deals with fabrics made of 100% organic raw cotton that are internationally certified and produced in several major textile regions of Japan. Raw materials, such as 100% organic cotton yarns and raw cotton, are mainly imported from India, Tanzania, Peru, Brazil and Switzerland. In every production region, safe and sound organic farming takes place without any child labour or unjust exploitation and all processes, including production, are inspected and internationally certified by third-party certification bodies.

Wide-ranging yarns with counts of 10 to 120 are available alongside abundant fabrics with a plethora of aspects and textures, all of which controlled under a thorough tracing system, insights into which come courtesy of an original traceability tool. Other plus points include the use of raw material with third-party certified organic cotton alongside the system used to control the raw materials/fabrics by lots, for traceability of production processes.

On this occasion they will also present items using raw dark-coloured and brown cotton side by side with delicate yarn-count 90 and 120 fabrics as well. They sum up their motivation with these words: ‘We hope to promote and ensure our products are widely known to visitors, as the fair itself focuses on sustainable fabrics,’ while aiming to cultivate new customers and expand sales channels with much anticipation.

MEIRIN SENI CO., LTD. <B-51>

Appealing with a focus on regenerated cellulose

MEIRIN SENI, based in Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture, is engaged in textile business centring on products of regenerated cellulose (rayon, acetate, cupro) and aims to realise a sustainable society while tackling social issues like global environment protection thorough their business; leveraging wide-ranging items such as textiles of the thin, thick, stretch, knit and jacquard varieties. They are set to participate in the PTJ ‘to boost their company image as well as aiming to develop new customers for D2C brands.’

The company specialises in cellulose and has been producing original fabrics, by selling grey fabrics stocked at their own risk.

As far as sustainability goes, they will showcase a variation around compound fabrics with acetate, rayon and cupro. Acetate compound comprises acetate for warp and natural fibre for weft and cupro compounds; cupro for warp/natural fibre for weft, while rayon compounds comprise rayon for warp and natural fibre for weft, with post-treated cellulose compound also on display. ‘In all the line-ups, warp is made of filament while weft is a natural fibre as a composition. We intend to propose fabrics that retain appealing aspects with a casual-classy impression and are equally well underpinned by a sustainability-conscious mindset.’

The company has set up a slogan; ‘connecting people and the globe with textiles’ and aims to proceed in their direction by continuously proposing values based on customers’ perspectives.
