West Indian Sea Island cotton had been a “hidden gem” of British stakeholders for 200 years. Its export to Japan was permitted in 1975. In 1976 the Japanese branch of UK based West Indian Sea Island Cotton Association was established, and it was reorganized as a cooperative in 1979. The cooperative’s main activity is to maintain this global treasure into the future through intensive quality management from its cultivation to the final products. Because the annual production of this cotton is limited, its traceability is strictly controlled by membership system. Today, the cooperative is handling three types of Sea Island cotton: “V-135” revival of a legendary type of Sea Island cotton, “American Sea Island cotton” inherits the DNA of Sea Island cotton, And original “West Indian Sea Island Cotton” |
