Kokura Stripes is a textile that was produced at the beginning of the 17th century by the Kokura feudal clan of southern Japan. A cotton cloth with vertical stripes , it was used to make the hakama(samurai trousers)and the obi(sash). This fabric is thickand strong but has a soft texture. The use of a greater number of warp threads in relation to weft threads creates delicate color gradations , giving the vertical stripes a 3-dimensional effect. The production of Kokura Stripes ceased around 1930, but it was revived by textile artist Noriko Tsuiki in 1984. The machine woven KOKURA SHIMA SHIMA collection, designed by Tsuiki, was launched in 2007. |
